Advanced Testing Variables

Harmonic Multiples (Strobes)

  • The Harmonic Trap: An object will appear stationary not just at its true RPM, but also at multiples of that RPM (e.g., flashing at 1000, 2000, 4000 FPM for a 4000 RPM fan).
  • Finding True RPM: Start flashing at a high frequency and lower it. The highest frequency that produces a single stationary image is the true RPM.

Ambient Light Interference

  • Laser Washout: Direct, intense sunlight can wash out the reflective tape signal on optical tachometers, causing erratic readings.
  • Strobe Contrast: Stroboscopes work best in dimmed environments. High ambient lighting reduces the visual contrast of the "frozen" image, making inspection difficult.

Contact Slippage & Pressure

  • Wheel Slip: If insufficient pressure is applied to a contact wheel on a moving belt, the wheel will slip, leading to artificially low speed readings.
  • Bearing Drag: Applying excessive force against a small motor shaft can physically slow the motor down or damage the tachometer's internal bearings.
